NSW ports achieve shorepower milestone

A standout milestone in its sustainability journey was the reduction of Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions to zero in January 2024, achieved through a renewable energy power purchase agreement. This marked a critical step toward the organisation’s net zero by 2040 target.

The port is investing heavily in shorepower infrastructure at White Bay Cruise Terminal, a Southern Hemisphere-first project due for completion in 2026.

“As stewards of the marine environment in each of NSW’s six commercial ports, it’s encouraging to see our sustainability efforts recognised by both Green Marine and the NSW government,” said Amy Beaumont, group executive, People, Environment and Legal.

“These achievements reflect the progress we’ve made in embedding sustainable practices across our operations, as we work towards net zero by 2040.”

Green Marine certification followed a comprehensive assessment across all six NSW port sites, measuring environmental performance across emissions, water, waste, community engagement and noise.

Meanwhile, Silver Partner status under Sustainability Advantage builds on the port’s Bronze status in 2021 and acknowledges efforts such as measuring and disclosing Scope 3 emissions and conducting a full climate risk assessment.
