Port of Koper expands with electric RTGs

The electric RTGs, scheduled for delivery by Q1 2025, will replace older models in Luka Koper’s container yard, aligning with the port’s long-term strategy for sustainable operations. 

“Konecranes RTGs give us the high peak performance we need and the cranes are reliable and easy to maintain,” said Edvin Boskin, technical manager of the Container Terminal at Luka Koper.

“We have a long-term electrification strategy and so does Konecranes, which makes this order a natural next step in our cooperation.”

Fleet electrification

These cranes will join a fleet of 28 Konecranes RTGs, 15 of which are fully electric and powered by cable reel systems. The port also operates four Konecranes Rail-Mounted Gantry (RMG) cranes, which it said further unscores its commitment to advanced port electrification solutions.

The electric RTGs will be equipped with auxiliary batteries and Konecranes’ Truck Lift Prevention feature, ensuring operational efficiency and safety.

Part of Konecranes’ Ecolifting initiative, these cranes aim to reduce carbon emissions while enhancing environmental sustainability, aligning with global decarbonisation goals.

As Luka Koper plans a significant expansion with a new quayside and container yard, its investment in electric RTGs marks a step forward in integrating advanced port equipment that supports both operational growth and environmental responsibility.
