ZEPA ramps up decarbonisation efforts

The alliance, launched in 2023, is focused on enabling widespread adoption of battery-electric container handling equipment (BE-CHE) through cross-industry collaboration.

“We have come a long way both as APM Terminals and with ZEPA,” said Jack Craig, Head of Business Implementation Management at APM Terminals. “With the new joining members, we have a strong team to move on the agenda with a tipping point for affordable and accessible electrified equipment within reach.”

ZEPA members are committed to tackling key barriers to BE-CHE implementation, such as affordability, voluntary standard-setting and grid infrastructure readiness.

The alliance recently launched its 2025 Work Programme at the TOC conference in Rotterdam, introducing four new workstreams aimed at scaling BE-CHE adoption.

These workstreams include assessing terminal energy load profiles, updating voluntary design standards for electric terminal tractors and straddle carriers, exploring financial instruments to reduce upfront costs, and providing guidance on the transition to fully electric fleets.

“One of the most pressing challenges ahead is ensuring our power infrastructure keeps pace with the transition to zero-emission equipment,” said DP World’s chief operating officer Tiemen Meester.

Edward Tah, managing director of PSA Belgium, added that ZEPA’s cross-value chain collaboration was vital. “Through this alliance, we aim to accelerate the transition by scaling up zero-emission equipment in collaboration with industry leaders worldwide,” he said.

ZEPA, coordinated by Systemiq, remains open to new members and encourages industry-wide participation in advancing zero-emission port operations.
