Automatic shore power beats the cold
Oslo port terminal and the ‘Color Magic’ ro-pax are to be equipped with a compact, automatically linked shore-power system, which means less exposure for port personnel to the often harsh conditions on the quay.
PLUG (the acronym “for Power Generation during Loading & Unloading”) shore power technology is based on a self mating and disconnection system that works by pressing a button on board the ship. The manufacturers, NG2, explains that beyond comfort and speed, it is a safe option since there is no direct handling of high voltage cables.
For this application, PLUG will provide both the ship side and quay side high voltage (11,000V) connection interfaces with a power exchange capability of more than 4 MVA.
Further, to cope with Oslo port winter conditions, specific technical solutions have been implemented, such as a thermally insulated and heated storage of the quay side high voltage connector to avoid any exposure to ice/snow build up.
