Automation gives Cargotec a lashing
Cargotec is looking to bridge the gap in terminal container flow by offering operators the chance to get even better with automation with its newly-purchased lashing and twistlock technology.
It’s expanding its portfolio with a fully automated lashing platform for quayside twistlock handling by assuming full responsibility for KALP GmbH products and services – rebranded under the Kalmar brand.
Frank Kho, senior vice president of terminals and offerings, Cargotec, said to Port Strategy: “Cargotec is constantly seeking new ways to make the flow of cargo more efficient and automation definitely plays an important part of it.”
He added: “The licence agreement with KALP is another important milestone on our journey to provide seamless integration between the critical elements of terminal operations.”
The acquisition of the terminal operating system (TOS) provider Navis in early 2011 certainly helped mark a major milestone for Cargotec on the journey towards automation.
All marine container operators are of course always striving for reduced costs, higher productivity and worker safety and seem to be increasingly looking towards automation to achieve this.
Cargotec suggest that by using automation to insert and remove semi automatic twistlocks on the quayside, the coning and de-coning process is reduced from 20 seconds down to just 1 – an obvious boost to productivity.
The platform needs no external power and produces zero emissions. It is easily integrated with a terminal operating system (TOS) helping operators to realise maximum efficiency.
