Greentech evaluation for box terminals
A new EU project aims to demonstrate the viability of new technologies and alternative fuels through pilot schemes implemented in the container terminals of Valencia, Livorno and Koper.
The general objective of the Greencranes project, delivered through the Ten-T programme, will be to test for the best alternative sustainable energy sources to those currently used, help the industry to make informed decisions and further it has a final goal of identifying recommendations necessary for draft European policies.
The kick off meeting outlined a number of activities: the first being the mapping of port container terminals’ energy profile, led by the Port of Koper; the second being the evaluation of eco-efficient alternatives, led by Noatum; the last activities being pilot demonstrations in the ports of Valencia, Koper and Livorno and a look at management, communication and coordination, led by the Valenciaport Foundation.
A visit to the Noatum Container Terminal Valencia also will look at one of the pilot schemes to be tested next year to demonstrate the viability of using liquefied natural gas (LNG) and/or electricity to power yard tractors and RTG cranes.
