A milestone in electric tug operations

Operated by Buksér og Berging, the tug highlights the environmental benefits of port electrification, marking a major milestone in reducing the carbon footprint of port activities.

“BB Electra is a testament to our commitment to sustainability. It showcases how electric tugboats can reduce emissions and set new benchmarks for eco-friendly maritime operations,” said Rüçhan Çıvgın, commercial director of Sanmar Shipyards.

Sustainable operations

The tug launched in April 2024, was designed by Robert Allan and built by Sanmar Shipyards in Turkiye.

It has since completed 81 towage operations over 835 running hours, demonstrating its efficiency and reliability.

With its 1,718 kWh battery capacity, BB Electra eliminates the need for diesel fuel, cutting greenhouse gas emissions and reducing other airborne pollutants. This not only enhances air quality but also supports global efforts to decarbonise port operations.

The vessel’s performance, including a bollard pull of 45 tonnes and a speed of 11.8 knots, is also proving that sustainability does not have to compromise operational capability.

BB Electra was created due to the growing demand for vessel electrification. As ports globally strive to meet stricter environmental regulations, the adoption of electric tugs like BB Electra is a crucial step toward greener and more efficient port operations.
