ABP signs development MoU with energy giant
The UK Port of Grimsby is living up to its reputation as a centre of excellence for offshore wind with the signing of an agreement to develop a base location for Innogy’s latest offshore wind project.
The MoU signed between port operator, ABP and energy giant, Innogy, could see additional jobs brought in to the area surrounding the port, where the Triton Knoll windfarm’s operations and maintenance (O&M) base will be located.
“The River Humber has been labelled as the UK’s Energy Estuary and as this deal shows, that’s for good reason. As well as the expansion to our existing showcase of excellent windfarm facilities, we’re most pleased at the prospect of further increasing employment in and around the port,” said Simon Bird, regional director for ABP Humber.
Support hub
The O&M base, located along the quayside on the port estate, will be the main hub for all support vessels travelling to and from the site. As well as housing office space and warehousing facilities, the O&M base will also be used by the crews working at Triton Knoll, which will be built 32km off the coast.
Construction for the 860MW project is due to commence in 2019, with the site anticipated to be fully online and commissioned by 2022.
Once complete, it is anticipated that the Triton Knoll project will be able to generate enough electricity to supply 800,000 households with renewable energy.
