Achieving optimal efficiency
Venice’s new offshore terminal masterplan has been hailed an interesting initiative by the International Transport Forum which says it could be replicated across other ports with insufficient water depths.
Not only that but having being designed by Royal HaskoningDHV the terminal’s performance has been optimised with a highly flexible and efficient system created in order to reduce equipment working costs by up to 25%.
Mara Pitaccolo, assistant to the president and secretary general, Venice Port Authority, told Greenport: “The key feature of this whole system is precisely the fact that it creates a continuous conveyor belt between the offshore and onshore inland terminals and vice versa allowing the reduction of dwell time when loading/unloading containers or transferring them to facilities inland.”
When completed, the offshore terminal will be able to handle 1.4m containers, whilst the onshore terminal in Porto Marghera, Montesyndial area, will handle 1.57m teu.
A 4.2km long breakwater will shelter an oil/LNG/energy terminal and there will be a container terminal able to accommodate up to three latest generation container ships at the same time.
A highly automated system will ensure loading/unloading performances equal to those of the best worldwide terminals.
The project has been engineered in cooperation with robust top-of-the-list advisors including Royal HaskoningDHV, PwC, BMT Triton, Halcrow and MDS Transmodal.
It’s due to be submitted for approval to the highest public authority by June 2015 (the C.I.P.E – Interministerial Committee for the Economic Planning, under the Presidency of the Council of the Ministers) and a PPP tender will follow.
