Bilbao’s multi-million port electrification project

This funding, proposed by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, supports the BilbOPS project, which aims to cut port emissions and noise by enabling ships to connect to onshore power supply while at berth. This initiative aligns with the Bilbao Port Authority’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

“This investment in port electrification is a crucial step toward sustainable maritime operations. Reducing emissions at berth will significantly improve air quality and minimise environmental impact,” a Ministry spokesperson stated.

Electrical transformation

The project involves constructing advanced electrical infrastructure, including a substation, high-voltage subsea cables and specialised equipment to adapt power to ships’ voltage and frequency needs.

Infrastructure will be installed at Docks A1, A2, A6, AZ3, and Getxo 2 and 3, ensuring vessels can switch off auxiliary engines while docked.

This tender is co-funded by the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF Funds) and the Bilbao Port Authority itself. The power supply for this OPS network will come from renewable sources, such as PV solar panels, to which wind energy will be added later.

The BilbOPS project will not only lower air and noise pollution but also position the Port of Bilbao as a leader in green port infrastructure.

It’s an initiative which also underscores Spain’s dedication to sustainable transport and environmental responsibility.

The Port of Bilbao will host Coastlink 2025 from 29 – 30 April, to be chaired once again by Nick Lambert, director and co-founder of NLA International.
