Electrification and automation power Barcelona’s expansion

The new electric, rail-mounted cranes automated cranes (ASC) from the Finnish supplier Konecranes will significantly boost the terminal’s storage capacity by 25% in the coming months, expanding from 27 to 34 automated blocks.

“This new investment will result in an increase in the terminal’s operational and storage capacity and will contribute to the continuous improvement of the quality of service in both maritime and inland operations,” said Guillermo Belcastro, CEO of Hutchison Ports BEST.

Clean equipment

These cranes, like most of the terminal’s equipment, are electric, highlighting the Hutchison Ports Group’s commitment to building an efficient and environmentally sustainable terminal in the Port of Barcelona.

Currently, BEST is equipped with 13 Super Post-Panamax quay cranes capable of handling the world’s largest ships, 54 automated cranes (ASC), two rail-mounted gantry cranes (RMG) and 40 Shuttle Carriers.

The terminal spans 80 hectares and features a berth of 1,500 metres with a depth of 16.5 metres, making it a pivotal node in global maritime logistics.

Hutchison Ports said that its focus on the electrification of terminal equipment not only enhances operational efficiency but also aligns with global sustainability goals.

In addition, it solidifies its position as a leader in integrating advanced, eco-friendly technologies in port operations, marking a significant step forward in the Port of Barcelona’s expansion and modernisation efforts.

Assembly and testing are scheduled over the next few weeks, with the first new block expected to be fully operational by September and the seventh by early 2025.
