Emission-free tug for sand transportation

The electric tug, known as the E-Pusher, will power an emission-free sand transport chain between Maasvlakte and Rotterdam in partnership with Jansma Shipping.

Zero-emission transport

KOTUG’s E-Pusher will ensure seamless, zero-emission transport of sand via electric barges, with final distribution by electric trucks.

Set to be completed by May 2025, the fully electric tug will be part of a larger sustainable system, with a dedicated 1-megawatt fast-charging station planned in Rotterdam.

By August 2025, the emission-free chain is expected to be fully operational, providing a new standard for clean shipping in the region.

Rotterdam said it is commited to sustainable shipping, providing emissions-free solutions for sand transport while meeting the growing needs of governments and large industries transitioning toward greener logistics.

Back in 2022, Kotug demonstrated the same zero emissions barge capability in Amsterdam. Its E-Pusher type M and four barges were deployed for zero-emission transport of cocoa beans from Cargill’s depot to the Port of Amsterdam, the world’s largest cocoa import port.
