German ports need an offshore wind fund
The German Offshore Wind Energy Association (BWO) is calling on the Bundestag to invest from a planned €500 billion fund into port infrastructure for renewable energy and offshore wind expansion.
BWO emphasises that improved port infrastructure is vital for Germany’s energy transition and security policy. Ports’ heavy-duty areas are essential for offshore wind development and military use.
“Ports play a central role in both the energy transition and security policy. Their heavy-duty areas can be used both for the expansion of offshore wind energy and for military purposes. Unfortunately, such areas are still too scarce in Germany,” said Stefan Thimm, managing director of the BWO.
Strategic approach needed
BWO said that Germany should be encouraged to follow Denmark’s lead, where the port of Esbjerg expanded its capacity for offshore wind and military use through targeted investment, backed by €115 million from the European Investment Bank.
“A similar strategic approach is necessary for Germany. The expansion targets for offshore wind energy set by law require more efficient port infrastructure to enable the transport and installation of new systems,” Mr Thimm added.
“At the same time, military actors also benefit from more robust port facilities.”
BWO suggests additional funds for port expansion could come from offshore wind auctions’ proceeds, strengthening maritime infrastructure long-term.
The association urges the federal government to prioritise port infrastructure financing and avoid jeopardising offshore wind energy expansion.
Strengthening port capacity aligns with Germany’s strategic resilience and economic growth goals along the coasts.
