Germany’s first all-electric ferry to break new ground

The E-Kat ferry was delivered to AG Reederei Norden-Frisia on 15 January, paving the way for a greener future in Germany’s maritime industry. 

“The E-Kat is a very special ferry. We are delighted that it has been delivered and look forward to seeing it in operation once the summer season gets underway,” said Joschka Böddeling, sales manager at Damen Shipyards.

Green commitment

When the vessel goes into operation during the summer, the vessel will carry up to 150 passengers between Norddeich and Norderney in the East Frisian Wadden Sea.

Designed for a 30-minute route, the 32-metre electric ferry features twin aluminium hulls, which reduces vessel weight and allows for a shallow draught of just 1.2 metres.

Powered by two 600kW electric motors, it will reach speeds of up to 19 knots while providing passengers with panoramic views of the UNESCO-listed Wadden Sea.

AG Reederei Norden-Frisia, known for its commitment to sustainability, has integrated the E-Kat into its long-term strategy for zero-emission operations. Owing to this fact, the ferry will be CO2-neutral, with its batteries charged entirely by onshore solar power.

This milestone highlights the growing momentum in vessel electrification, with operators continued focus on reducing maritime emissions. Germany in particular is looking to set a new standard for sustainable passenger transport across Europe.
