Helsinki’s wastewater challenge

Four shipping companies accepted the challenge and, over the course of the summer, cruise ships pumped over 30,000 tonnes of wastewater into Helsinki’s sewer system, tripling the volume pumped in the previous year. One-third of the cruise ship visits left their wastewater in Helsinki. Previously, the figure was just over 10 percent of the visits. During the 2008 navigation season, the Port of Helsinki did not charge international cruise ships a wastewater fee; instead, the reception of wastewater was included in the ship-generated waste water fee.
