Major renewable energy push in Valencia

This initiative forms part of the European RENMARINAS DEMOS project, which supports renewable energy innovation and decarbonisation across the maritime sector.

“The aim of the project is to promote the sustainable use of clean energy sources in the maritime sector, thereby contributing to the decarbonisation and improved energy efficiency of the port sector,” the Port Authority of Valencia said in a statement on its website.

Renewables push

Valenciaport has launched a tender worth more than €1.7 million for the design, supply and installation of electrical evacuation systems linked to a floating photovoltaic plant in the Port of Valencia and a wave energy plant in the Port of Sagunto.

The project is scheduled for completion within 11 months and supports the authority’s wider ‘Net Zero Emissions Plan.’

Funded through the European Union’s Next Generation EU programme and managed by the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE), RENMARINAS DEMOS focuses on accelerating marine renewable energy technologies including offshore wind, wave and tidal energy.

The programme also supports research collaboration, specialised training and real-world demonstration projects designed to improve energy integration within port infrastructure.

Valenciaport said the project reinforces its long-term strategy for port electrification, renewable energy adoption and emissions reduction across the ports of Valencia, Sagunto and Gandía.

The authority aims to strengthen the role of its ports as hubs for applied innovation and sustainability within the European port sector through the deployment of floating solar power and other marine renewable energy technologies.
