Port of Bilbao backs offshore wind

The Port of Bilbao is set to strengthen its position as a strategic hub for offshore wind energy with the approval of a major concession expansion for Haizea Bilbao, part of the Haizea Wind Group.

The port’s board of directors has greenlit an additional 128,668m² of space at Docks AZ-2 and AZ-3, adjacent to Haizea’s current site.

The expansion supports Haizea Wind’s phased growth strategy and reinforces Bilbao’s role in the offshore wind supply chain. The company, which manufactures towers and foundations for offshore wind farms, has already invested over €300 million in its dockside operations since commencing activity at the port in 2018. With this new allocation, Haizea Wind’s total concession area will reach approximately 340,000m².

The new area includes spaces previously held by Servicios Logísticos Portuarios and Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy Eólica, both of which have relocated within the port to Dock AZ-0 and the Central Breakwater, respectively. This reorganisation is designed to enhance operational efficiency and better accommodate the needs of renewable energy firms.

Bilbao has become a key logistics and manufacturing base for the offshore wind sector in Spain and southern Europe. The port is home to several major wind energy companies, including Euskalforging, Forjas de Iraeta, Nordex Acciona and Siemens Gamesa.

The region’s industrial ecosystem supports a full offshore wind value chain, with capabilities ranging from component production to specialised logistics.

The latest expansion at Bilbao reflects growing demand in the offshore wind sector and the port’s commitment to enabling large-scale clean energy infrastructure.
