Saga Fjordbase invests in electric crane

Scheduled for delivery in Q1 2026, the crane is fully electric and designed to integrate seamlessly into the base’s 1,060,000 sqm logistics network.

“This is a strategic addition to our port,” said Dag Eikeland, vice president of logistics at Saga Fjordbase.

“Its electric drive and energy optimisation features directly support our efforts to reduce emissions and improve quay turnaround times.”

Configured for electric operation, the LHM 280 includes a rotator for versatile cargo handling, an 84 tonne winch and 48 metre outreach, making it well-suited for the high-throughput demands of offshore platform supply chains. Notably, its integrated reactive power compensation unit helps stabilise voltage and improve grid efficiency by reducing energy loss.

Saga Fjordbase has worked closely with Liebherr to ensure the crane meets the unique operational and environmental conditions on Norway’s west coast.

“This delivery reflects a shared understanding of what’s needed in today’s port operations,” said Andreas Ritschel, general manager sales at Liebherr-Rostock.

“We’ve collaborated with Saga Fjordbase to deliver a solution that aligns with their long-term infrastructure goals.”

Part of a broader electrification strategy that includes digital tools like Saga Connect, the crane’s deployment is expected to further reduce quay turnaround time – already improved by 30% – while reinforcing Saga Fjordbase’s role as Norway’s largest offshore supply base.
