Zero emission ferries for Spanish green corridor

This short sea connection will establish the first intercontinental green corridor between Tarifa-Tangier Ville, offering an eco-efficient, emissions-free transportation solution for passengers and cargo.

“This is a pioneering public-private project that will enable us, for the first time ever, to run the entire route using only electric energy and, therefore, zero emissions,” said Adolfo Utor, president, Baleària at the unveiling during Fitur 2025.

Awarded by the Algeciras Bay Port Authority (APBA), the 15-year contract underscores the importance of sustainability and innovation in modern port vessel operations.

The twin catamarans, set to be constructed at Spain’s Armon Shipyard, will feature cutting-edge 16 MW electric propulsion units and 11,500 kWh batteries capable of powering the entire 18-mile voyage without emissions.

Ports will also be upgraded with autonomous robotic arms and Onshore Power Systems (OPS) to recharge the vessels in just 40 minutes, ensuring minimal impact to journey times.

Highlighting the collaborative effort, Mr Utor described the project as “a green umbilical cord uniting two countries with close cultural and economic ties.”

With anticipated completion in 2027, the route is expected to handle four million passengers annually, bolstering local economies and solidifying Baleària’s position as a leader in the electric ferry market.

This initiative reinforces Baleària’s goal of zero emissions by 2050, complementing its eco-efficient fleet strategy and commitment to sustainable short sea shipping solutions.
