European Commission piles pressure on Spain
The European Commission has told Spains Puertos del Estado that it has no more than two weeks to come up with a working plan in respect of major changes that the Court of Justice has asked the Spanish government to implement with regard to its existing stevedoring model.
The Commission reiterated that it was not satisfied with the speed of negotiations with all those concerned in the process and was “seriously considering” referring Spain back to the Court of Justice for its non-fulfilment of directives and that this could lead to sanctions.
While conceding that implementing the necessary changes would not be easy, the Commission made it quite clear that it thought it had given Spain sufficient time to put forward a new stevedoring model.
Should the decision be taken to make a further referral to the Court of Justice, this would take at least two months to prepare.
