Hamburg counts its cold stars

The contents including fruit, meat, fish, vegetables and dairy products, mostly came from the Far East, South America, the rest of Asia, the South Seas and Indonesia, and Norway.

Last month, FRIGO Coldstore Logistics opened its third cold store in the port to meet the continued increase in demand for deepfreeze capacity. When it is completed in August, this new building will take FRIGO’s total cool capacity at the port to 40,000 pallets in 18,000 square metres.

The per-head consumption of frozen food has risen continuously and with it the challenge to provide enough storage space, says Hamburg.

In total, the Port of Hamburg handled 139m tonnes in 2013, which was up 6.2% on 2012. Alongside the 4.4% increase in containers, general cargo was up 5.7% and bulks up by 7.2%. When the figures were presented, Port of Hamburg Marketing’s Axel Mattern took the opportunity the push the case, once again, for dredging the Elbe.

“We need to stress to the public in general that the infrastructure for traffic into and out of the seaports lies in the interest of the entire national economy,” he said. “We are therefore relying on a positive decision this year by the Federal Administrative Court in Leipzig on the deepening of the navigation channel on the Lower and Outer Elbe.
