Beirut looks to the sea
The port of Beirut authority is considering a $40m project to reclaim an area of 150,000 sq m.
The expansion is being driven by burgeoning demand, with the port handling 498,000 containers in 2007, effectively breaching its engineered capacity.
The aim is to expand capacity to 1.5m teu by the end of 2008.
At present, half of all containers handled are transhipped.
