BMT helps plan worlds biggest coal port
Plans for the expansion of the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal in Queensland, to make it the world’ s largest coal port, have been produced with the help of BMT Maritime Consultants, a subsidiary of British Maritime Technology (BMT).
Sustained strong demand for Australian coal has led to a need for capacity expansion at the terminal to meet the needs of existing and potential mining customers.
International shipping delays, global re-allocation of shipping and land transport capacity constraints, coupled with supply challenges, have decreased the ‘just in time’ inventories of steel makers and power generators to critical levels. In addition, Chinese and Indian demand for coking coal is also rising to fuel economic growth. The general global demand for thermal coals also shows no sign of slowing.
The Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal at Hay Point, currently exports approximately 6% of the world’s seaborne coal trade making it Australia’s second largest export coal terminal and the third largest coal export terminal in the world.
To prevent bottlenecks from occurring, BMT assisted in the development of the master port expansion plan. The owner, Prime Infrastructure, could invest as much as $436m on expansion of the facility to meet current and future requirements for terminal capacity.
