Electric port cranes to boost terminal efficiency

The new fleet includes four electric quay cranes and eight rubber-tyred gantry cranes, further modernising operations at Thailand’s largest and most advanced terminal.

“The arrival of this new equipment marks a significant milestone in Hutchison Ports’ vision to modernise port infrastructure and enhance Thailand’s competitiveness in the logistics sector,” said Stephen Ashworth, managing director of Hutchison Ports Thailand and Southeast Asia.

Smart technology

These state-of-the-art electric cranes feature a 24-row outreach and can stack containers up to ten tiers high.

Smart technologies, such as anti-collision systems, container inspection systems and semi-automated controls, ensure swift and precise container handling. 

Enhanced safety features, including auto-steering and target detection systems, ensure smooth yard operations.

The equipment reduces emissions compared to traditional diesel-powered cranes, aligning with HPT’s sustainability goals.

In total, terminal D now boasts 14 quay cranes and 36 rubber-tyred gantry cranes, improving its capacity to handle three mega vessels simultaneously. 

Once development is complete, Terminal D will operate 17 quay cranes and 43 rubber-tyred gantry cranes, powered entirely by electricity, with a projected capacity of 3.4 million teu annually.

HPT said that this strategic investment underscores its commitment to port electrification and terminal efficiency, supporting sustainable growth for Thailand’s logistics industry.
