Portsmouth International Port’s Portico terminal has taken delivery of three new Kalmar DRG450-65S6X reachstackers with EU4 Volvo diesel engines that conform to the European regulation for emissions.

To further reduce emissions, AdBlue, a water/urea based operating fluid will be fed into part of the exhaust of the vehicles to trigger a chemical reaction which converts NOx exhaust gases into nitrogen and water in a process known as Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR).

Alex Beddow, ports & terminals sales manager at Kalmar UK, said: “Safety, technology, emissions & economy were key points that Portico wanted to improve, with our R&D team we worked on a package that would meet all of their requirements.

“The latest EU4 Volvo engine with Ad‐blue not only increased economy but also brought down emissions to help the port achieve lowering their carbon footprint.

“Kalmar’s new Insight fleet monitoring system help monitor driving styles, shocks and pressure points that can slow down the operation, couple all this together and we were able help improve productivity and lower the total cost of ownership.”

The reachstackers, which are capable of stacking loaded containers up to six high, have eco-mode settings and a Volvo stop-start system, which helps further reduce fuel consumption and CO2.

Intelligent shut down systems scan the machines and look for non-activity driver input. These systems can then shut the engines down.

The safety systems automatically reduce the travel speed to increase safety and reduce fuel consumption.
