Equipping Latin America’s first fully electrified terminal

APM Terminals Suape has received 28 fully electrified Sany equipment units at the Governador Eraldo Gueiros Industrial and Port Complex in Pernambuco, Brazil, enabling the terminal to advance into the final technical stage before operations begin in the second half of 2026.

“This is a crucial milestone for the project, which now enters the final stage of building the terminal’s main infrastructure,” said Daniel Rose, managing director of APM Terminals Suape and Pecém.

“The terminal will strengthen the efficiency, safety, and logistics competitiveness of Pernambuco and the entire Northeast region. This consolidates APM Terminals Suape as one of the most significant recent private investments in the region’s port infrastructure.”

Port modernisation

The equipment delivery forms part of a wider US$350 million investment aimed at delivering one of the country’s largest private port infrastructure projects while advancing port electrification and modernising port equipment for container handling.

Sany’s scope of supply includes two ship-to-shore cranes with a 70-metre outreach capable of handling vessels longer than 366 metres, alongside seven rubber-tyred gantry cranes for container yard operations.

The terminal’s port equipment will be operated remotely from dedicated control rooms, improving safety, ergonomics and accessibility by allowing operators to work without climbing cranes or accessing elevated machinery.

Additional equipment includes two reach stackers, a 16-tonne forklift, two empty-container forklifts and 14 terminal tractors.

Once operational, the facility will initially handle up to 400,000 teu annually, expanding Suape’s capacity by 55% and strengthening logistics connectivity for Northeast Brazil while supporting regional trade and economic growth.
