Gdynia to reap the benefit of hybrid RTGs

The terminal, owned by ICTSI, is one of the Baltic Sea’s key container hubs. This is its first investment in Konecranes port equipment, with the contract marking the manufacturer’s 3,000th RTG. 

“We chose the Konecranes RTGs because they offer the best combination of performance and lower emissions,” said Maciej Maliszewski, technical director at BCT.

“They met our requirements in terms of the technical solution, warranty, value for the investment and delivery time. This investment fits perfectly with our goal of improving handling capacity while reducing our environmental footprint.”

Greener option

Each hybrid crane combines battery power with a compact diesel genset, offering lower fuel consumption and reduced environmental impact when compared to conventional port RTGs.

The investment is designed to help BCT meet growing demand for container handling while aligning operations with long-term sustainability targets.

In addition to their hybrid drive, the new cranes will feature Konecranes smart features including Stack Collision Prevention, Auto-Steering and Auto-TOS Reporting to increase efficiency and safety at the terminal.

Manufacture of the new cranes will take place in Poland through Konecranes’ local supply chain, underlining its commitment to regional production in the transition to cleaner port equipment.

The project is being supported by European Union funding from NextGenerationEU under Poland’s National Recovery Plan, which promotes intermodal projects and greener transport infrastructure.
