Liebherr electric crane boosts efficiency
A new LPS 420 portal crane has taken up duty at Nuh Çimento’s private port in Hereke, Turkey, marking a significant upgrade for one of the country’s busiest cement exporters.
The fully electric crane is already handling high volumes of clinker and cement, a demanding workload that previously fell to the company’s long-serving LPS 400 installed in 1999.
Port workers say the shift to the newer model has been seamless. “The LPS 420 was a natural choice for us,” said a Nuh Çimento representative.
“Installation was quick and easy, just like a Lego. Our operators adapted to the new crane very quickly because it is practical and easy to use. It feels like a continuation of what we already knew, but with more power and less effort.”
While the old LPS 400 helped define the design standard for Liebherr’s portal slewing cranes, maintenance needs had begun to mount. The new crane has clear performance advantages – smoother slewing thanks to a closed hydraulic circuit, tighter control via the Litronic system and lower energy consumption through its electric drive.
The upgrade aligns with Nuh Çimento’s broader operational realities. Its port, with a 595-metre berth and capacity for vessels up to 80,000 deadweight tonnes, relies on fast turnaround times.
Crane availability, the company says, is non-negotiable. “Our cranes must be ready to work when needed,” the representative added. “With Liebherr, we have ensured a safe and reliable working environment.”
Liebherr officials describe the project as a continuation of a decades-long partnership. “The LPS 420 delivers a future-ready solution that supports their evolving operational and environmental goals,” said Andreas Ritschel, general manager Sales Mobile Harbour Cranes at Liebherr-Rostock.
