Port electrification milestone at Constanța

The terminal, which operates the largest container facility on the Black Sea, has taken delivery of two LHM 600 mobile harbour cranes configured for tandem lifts of up to 400 tonnes.

“This project is more than an equipment acquisition. For the last 20 years, the Port of Constanța’s success has been built on continuous investment in modernisation, digitalisation and the diversification of our operational capacities,” said Marian Drăgoi, general manager at DP World Constanța.

Expansion strategy

Supplied from Liebherr’s Rostock facility, the electric crane systems feature advanced drives, integrated 360° camera suites and site-specific structural adaptations to enhance safety, efficiency and multimodal cargo flexibility.

The investment supports DP World’s expansion strategy in Romania, combining sustainability objectives with the ability to accommodate new cargo streams.

Each crane operates primarily on an advanced electric drive system designed for efficiency and lower emissions, with a diesel engine available as a backup to ensure continuity.

Liebherr’s Sycratronic assistance system enables synchronised tandem movements, while a full-surround camera suite improves situational awareness for operators.

Specially engineered supporting pads tailored to the berth’s structural characteristics further enhance stability during high-capacity lifts.

Designed for multi-purpose deployment, the cranes can transition seamlessly between container handling, grab operations and heavy-lift assignments without compromising cycle times.

DP World Constanța’s terminal handles diverse cargo, including wind turbines, industrial machinery, vehicles and containers..
