Port of Felixstowe electrifies its gantry cranes

The five new cranes, which include remote-control capabilities, are part of a 17-crane order from Konecranes of Finland, reflecting the port’s commitment to modernising its equipment and reducing carbon emissions.

“These new cranes are the latest stage of our drive to deliver a first-class customer service and remove carbon from our operations. We have set an ambitious target to reach Net-Zero for scopes 1 & 2 by 2035,” said Robert Ashton, chief operating officer of the Port of Felixstowe.

“As part of our program to phase out all diesel equipment, these new cranes take us another step closer to our goal.”

Efficient lifting

The new electric cranes are designed to lift containers 1-over-6 high and can span seven rows plus a roadway.

Although fully capable of operating autonomously, they will initially function in a semi-autonomous mode, with operators using remote control to manage lifts to and from carrying vehicles.

This mix of automation and electrification will enhance the efficiency and predictability of port operations, crucial for accommodating the world’s largest container ships.

The cranes are currently being unloaded at the port’s Trinity Terminal and will be commissioned at Berths 8 & 9 before entering service.
