DP World joins electric HGV push

The Joint Operators Logistics Trial (JOLT) will test the real-world performance of battery electric trucks across 14 major UK fleets, including DP World’s Swindon operations.

Critical project

The JOLT consortium brings together 14 fleets, three major Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) Volvo, Scania and DAF, two leading universities, University of Cambridge (Engineering) and Heriot-Watt University (Logistics).

It also includes other specialists including software manufacturers, network charging operators and electric fleet service providers. The project is funded by its participants.

As part of the project, DP World will operate two fully electric HGVs for three months, gathering critical data on operational performance, battery range, charging infrastructure and cost-effectiveness.

If successful, DP World plans to order 45 electric HGVs for its automotive logistics operations and aims to transition 70% of its 802-strong European fleet to EVs by 2030.

The operator’s broader sustainability efforts include its Modal Shift and Carbon Inset Programme. This has already moved over 100,000 container journeys from road to rail, cutting 25,000 tonnes of CO₂e and rewarded importers through over 150,000 teu registered in port carbon insets.

DP World’s dual approach also includes testing hydrogen fuel cell trucks in Germany, reinforcing its commitment to a sustainable supply chain and green logistics across Europe.
