Encouraging better carbon literacy at ports

Developed after consulting with leading UK and international ports, and in collaboration with the Carbon Literacy Trust, the toolkit from the 2050 Maritime Innovation Hub marks a transformative stride towards engaging port professionals to improve their carbon literacy levels.

“Our toolkit is designed to reshape perceptions about how to manage climate change and engage everyone working in the industry to become more mindful of how they can contribute individually,” said Eleni Bougioukou, innovation manager for energy and sustainability at the Port of Tyne.

”We want to instill a culture intent on reducing the carbon footprint within the whole sector and by providing accessible and engaging learning experiences, we hope to ensure a more sustainable future.”

Bite-sized learning

Embracing cutting-edge AI technology to deliver bite sized learning modules, the content within the Carbon Literacy Toolkit was created by sustainability and maritime experts at the Port of Tyne.

It uses video tutorials to empower port professionals with accessible, practical knowledge, enabling them to effect meaningful changes in their daily operations.

The Carbon Literacy Learning and Development (L&D) Toolkit was unveiled to the ports and maritime industry at Maritime Innovation Week 2023, just one year after the initial project to create an environmental education programme for the industry was announced.

Also launched at Maritime Innovation Week 2023 was the Venture Connect Green Investment Programme.

The Venture Connect Green Investment Programme will provide a unique opportunity to link local businesses developing solutions for decarbonisation in maritime, including university spin-offs and start-ups seeking investment, with responsible investors wishing to support a more sustainable, low-carbon maritime industry.

Since its launch in 2019, the 2050 Maritime Innovation Hub has built a strong track record for sustainable innovation in the North East of England, providing an independent forum to further the development of a technologically advanced, low-carbon maritime industry.

The 2050 Maritime Innovation Hub is a collaborative initiative led by the Port of Tyne and partners including Connected Places Catapult, Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult (OREC), Nissan and the Department for Transport.
