Evac launches food waste collection system
Finnish waste collection system manufacturer, Evac, has launched its Food Waste Collection System which can manage the entire waste handling system for both vessels and rigs.
Evac’s complete food waste handling and processing system has been designed to handle both dry wet waste on small to mid size vessels, suitable for merchant and offshore vessels in particular.
The company designed the system following the revisions to the waste management requirements of the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) MARPOL Annex V.
As of 1 January 2013, all waste onboard ships and rigs, except food waste, has to be collected or incinerated. The regulations prohibit the discharge of all garbage into the sea except under specified circumstances for discharge of food waters, cargo residues, desk wash waters and animal carcasses.
Evac’s system is based on vacuum technology which is completely automatic, offering the ship owner a reliable solution with low installation and operating costs. The vacuum system carries the food waste by pipe to a cyclone which feeds the waste to a water extracting station where water is removed.
The complete system includes an infeed station with a macerator, vacuum piping, a food waste tank, a food waste press, a heavy duty shredder, a tin can densifier, a glass breaker, a cardboard compactor, sorting tables and a food and dry waste incinerator.
