Expediting electrification with floating solar power
Associated British Ports (ABP) has submitted plans for the UK’s largest floating solar power project, Barrow EnergyDock, advancing port electrification and renewable energy goals.
The proposed Barrow EnergyDock at the Port of Barrow will see solar panels deployed on floating pontoons in Cavendish Dock, generating up to 40MWp of solar power – enough to supply around 14,000 homes annually.
“We’re excited to see the planning application submitted for Barrow EnergyDock and the first element of ABP’s Port of Barrow Masterplan start to take shape,” said Bryan Davies, divisional port manager (Northwest and Scotland), ABP.
“This project is a pivotal step in realising our vision for a prosperous and sustainable future for Barrow.”
Sustainability boost
This renewable energy will mainly support Barrow’s advanced engineering sector, helping control electricity costs and boosting sustainability.
Barrow EnergyDock’s floating solar array will consist of approximately 47,000 solar panels, covering a third of Cavendish Dock’s water area. The project preserves port land for manufacturing while delivering significant renewable energy capacity.
“We are thrilled to be submitting the planning application for Barrow EnergyDock,” said Kirsten Abbott, group commercial manager (Energy), ABP. “This project aligns with ABP’s sustainability strategy and represents a significant step towards a greener future.”
As part of the development process ABP commissioned Green Cat Renewables, an environmental and engineering consultancy, to help develop and deliver the planning application elements of the project.
The operator said that environmental studies suggest no significant ecological impact from the development and if the planning application is agreed, current leisure activities on the dock will continue as normal.
