Oakland Port joins whale initiative

BWBS is a voluntary initiative that encourages shipping lines to slow their speeds to 10 knots or less in designated coastal zones between May and December. This reduction helps protect endangered whales, cut underwater noise and reduce greenhouse gas emissions during peak migration and ozone seasons.

“The port’s participation is another example of our commitment to environmental stewardship,” said Colleen Liang, environmental director at the Port of Oakland. “This programme will help our shipping partners meet the demands of commerce in a more sustainable way.”

As an ambassador, the port will work with shipping lines to promote compliance and expand industry participation. The port is already seeing strong support with companies representing 84% of its vessel calls, including CMA CGM, Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd, taking part in the programme.

“Support from our ambassadors enhances awareness and helps us express appreciation to high-performing shipping lines,” said Becca Tucker, director of corporate engagement for BWBS. “We’re proud to welcome one of the top ten ports in the US to this great programme.”

The BWBS initiative is backed by NOAA, multiple national marine sanctuaries and California air quality agencies.
