Kalmar to open Shanghai assembly plant..

Cargo handling equipment supplier Kalmar is to invest $10m in a new assembly plant in the Shanghai area.

According to the company, the plant will primarily serve the Asian container-handling market, which it describes as the fastest growing area “for most Kalmar products.”

Shanghai itself is a major growth centre in China for container handling activity.

Assembly is planned to start by the end of 2005 with terminal tractors being the first product introduced.

Relatively quickly, however, it is planned to use the plant as a platform from which to penetrate the Asian RTG market. It will also function as a service and support base for the region.
