Khalifa upgrade contract awarded

The UAE-based National Marine Dredging Company (NMDC) has said it has been given a $268m contract to expand the country’s Khalifa Port.

The facility extension will add 1,000 metres of quay wall and deepen its main channel and basin to 18 metres (from a current 16 metres), taking the port’s total annual capacity to 5.6m teu upon completion.

According to NMDC, the new quay wall will add a further 600,000 square metres for cargo handling.

Abu Dhabi Ports recently received 10 automated rail-mounted gantry cranes and four ship-to-shore cranes for deployment at the port.

The products, which were shipped from Shanghai in China, constitute the initial batches of equipment to be installed at CSP Abu Dhabi Port Container Terminal (COSCO), the second container terminal being constructed at Khalifa Port — which is due to be finished at the end of 2018.
