In his keynote address at the 2013 GreenPort Congress, the CEO of the Port of Antwerp, Eddy Bruyninckx, also stated that environmental management should go hand in hand with port management.

The 8th GreenPort Congress was held last week in Antwerp, Belgium on 9-11 October 2013, and was hosted by the Port of Antwerp, which was also the host of the 1st GreenPort Congress held in 2006.

During his keynote speech, the CEO of the Port of Antwerp, Eddy Bruyninckx, welcomed participants back to Antwerp and also stated that, historically, ports have seen environmental management as a threat. Bruyninckx went on to say that the Port of Antwerp has learned that environmental management should be seen as an opportunity as it improves effectiveness and efficienty of operations in the port and should be fully integrated into port management, succesful environmental management also creates unique selling possibilities as it makes the port a more attractive proposition for investors. Ships using LNG as a fuel or scrubbers are very welcome at the Port of Antwerp, the Port of Antwerp's CEO commented.

The 8th GreenPort Congress saw nearly 200 delegates from over 30 countries come together in Antwerp to discuss and debate in a series of Working Groups and Plenary Sessions, Air quality management in ports, Waste and materials management in port areas, Managing the direct impact on the community and Environmental reporting and communication.
