Industry experts have already called for additional guidance on mandatory container weighing, while agreeing that enforcement is the only way to ensure accuracy of container weights.
The consensus is that it is difficult to decide where containers should be weighed: the shippers’ premises, on route to ports during inland transportation or at the container terminal.
Initially it was thought that the weighing process had to take place at the port but that could cause pinch points, especially at congested ports.
Industry representatives hvae agreed that parties in the supply chain need to work together to reach an acceptable solution as to the timing and location of the weighing for all concerned.
