There’s a new low emission harbour crane on the market which promises to improve efficiency without compromising economical and sustainable cargo handling in ports and terminals.

The Terex Port Solutions (TPS) Gottwald Model 5 harbour diesel electric crane will be able to handle post-Panamax container vessels with up to 17 rows onboard.

Model 5 makes use of TPS low maintenance three-phase electrical system technology simplifying the implementation of energy saving technologies including hybrid drives which enable external power feeds from the terminal’s electricity supply.

Giuseppe Di Lisa, vice president sales & service, TPS, said: “The development activities relating to drive technology are aimed at providing customers with the benefits of technological progress as soon as it is marketable, which improves efficiency and, as a result, reduces the consumption of primary energy wherever possible."

He pointed out that by doing so, TPS makes it possible for operators to maintain competitive operating costs while meeting environmental requirements - for example when it comes to applying for terminal concessions.

The Model 5 has a maximum lifting capacity of 125 tonnes in conjunction with a lifting capacity curve of 51m with hoisting speeds of up to 120m/minute.

As well as a stationary pedestal crane, Model 5 will also be available as portal harbour crane on rails and a floating crane on a barge.

TPS says that it takes its cue on the development of green and other “smart” technologies from exchanging ideas with its customers.
