In a bid to improve barge waste collection, the Port of Antwerp has constructed a new waste collection facility for barges, the Lillo Park Service Quay.
The new facility, which is open since 30 March 2013, is located at quay 601 (Tijsmans Tunnel West).
The Lillo Park will enable the barge industry to drop off waste during normal weekday opening hours, as well as on Saturday mornings. Like other waste collection centre, the new service quay will also have a drinking water point and a car disembarkation site available 24 /7.
It is the second waste collection facility to be opened on the right bank of the Scheldt, after the Noordkasteel Park at quay 76.
Together with the Kallo Park, at quay 1103, and the bilge boat, these facilities collect some 5000 tonnes of barge waste each year.
Construction of the service quay also provided the opportunity to make structural improvements to the river banks, creating more cover for young fish from the nearby spawning ground. Floating platforms, breakwaters and gabions have been built to serve as habitats for fish and other organisms such as molluscs and seaweed.
