Oil pollution at Pointe Noire restricts vessel traffic
In the past few months, there have been severe pollution problems in the port of Pointe-Noire, in Congo, which means that vessels calling at the port continue to have their hulls contaminated.
The oil pollution has been a well known issue for months, the pollution problem was detected back in September 2012, but nothing appears to have been done to eliminate the source of the pollution or to clean up the affected port areas. The Pointe Noire Port Authority is aware of the current situation, but there are no signs that the situation will improve in the near future.
The water and fenders in the port are polluted with oil due to dredging operations which were carried out on several quays. Consequently this represents an obstacle to vessels calling at this port, which have their hulls contaminated to a lesser or greater extent depending on local conditions at the time.
