Deepwater plans for Damietta
Damietta Port Authority (DPA) has signed a contract for a new 630m-long, 17m deep berth at the Egyptian port and an adjacent handling yard totalling 75,000m².
These latest plans fall within the Ministry of Transport’s ambitious plan to upgrade the country’s ports to accommodate the next generation of large vessels and attract new container lines. Damietta Port already has two new berths that were opened in October 2014.
“This project will allow ships with unprecedented dimensions and volumes to enter Damietta Port,” said Vice Admiral Ayman Saleh Ibrahim.
“It also coincides with a really big ongoing dredging operation of the Access Channel carried out by world’s premier dredging company to reach 16.5m draft,” he added.
As a result, DPA has contracted more 60 tonne capacity tugboats, one of which is already at work.
