Kenya relieves ports chief

The dismissal happened shortly after representatives from the government of Rwanda came to Kenya to discuss the impact that inefficiency at the port of Mombasa was having on their country. Uganda had previously registered its concerns, too.

Mr Mwaruwa was replaced by Mr James Mulewa, the port manager in charge of reform. In a related move, the managing director of Rift Valley Railways, which links Kenya’s ports with Uganda, was also replaced.

The government has since ordered Mombasa to remain open 24 hours a day to prevent congestion build up.
