Namibia invests in expansion

Namibian Ports Authority is to invest € 58.79m in expanding capacity at its ports in Walvis Bay and Luderitz. Walvis Bay presently generates an annual throughput of 3.3m tonnes, which is equivalent to 30%-40% of total capacity.

The plan, for which environmental impact studies have not yet been completed, involves the creation of a new basin capable of turning 9,000 teu vessels.

Annual traffic at Luderitz is limited to just over 200,000 tonnes of cargo, although traffic is influenced by AngloAmerican’s Scorpion Zinc Mine, which imports substantial amounts of sulphur.
