New Algerian transhipment port project

Algerias prime minister Abdelmalek Sellal has revealed that a new port is to built between the cities of Cherchell, which is located in the province of Tipaza, and Tenes, which is part of Chlef.

This centrally located facility, he told a meeting of government, unions and employee representatives, will be launched in 2016.

It will be located at Biskra, which is some 425 km southeast of the capital, Algiers.

According to the prime minister, both state and private companies would be involved in the construction, although finance for operations would be sourced from foreign investors.
The port would be aimed mostly at the transhipment market, he added, and would have a “huge” capacity.

As for infrastructure costs, he said that the $1.89bn cost would be met by the state, with construction to be carried out in three phases over a ten-year time frame.
In addition to its own 1,000-hectare operating area, there would also be an adjacent, 300-hectare logistics zone.
