Port Reunion

A five-hectare extension to the terminal was officially inaugurated last month, doubling the size of the area available for container stacking. A fourth gantry crane was installed last year to handle the increase in container traffic, and work is continuing to optimise the container terminal operations. Port Reunion’s total traffic passed the 4m tonnes mark last year, increasing 6.7% to 4.2m tonnes.

Container traffic rose 12% to 224,873 teu. Within this, transhipment traffic was up again – it had fallen for two years after the loss of one transhipment customer.

Sugar exports were up for the first time in four years, increasing 10% to 182,186 tonnes.

A series of other developments at Port Reunion include the creation of a new fishing basin, due for completion in December, and a new grain terminal and new multifunction warehouse, to be completed in 2009.
