Project threatens ancient fish

The endangered species,

Latimeria chalumnae

, or Coelacanth, is usually found at depths exceeding 300 feet (90 metres) and has, with its stocky body, armoured scales and unusual swim pattern, survived in the region virtually unchallenged for tens of millions of years.

Moreover, the Tanzania Natural Resource Forum has pointed out that the Mwambani Bay port project may be unnecessary. They claim a nearby port at Tanga Bay is only half utilised and upgrading this existing port would only cost a fraction of the cost of the new construction.
