Second port for Kenya mooted
A strong case is being made in Kenya for construction of a second port in Lamu given current high levels of congestion at Mombasa.
The country’s leading port handled 19m tonnes last year and is expected to reach its engineered capacity of 20m tonnes this year.
If Lamu is built, it will handle cargo for Ethiopia and the Sudan, leaving Mombasa to look after Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
