Skills shortage in South African ports
Implementation of a $1.24bn expansion project by South Africas Transnet Port Terminals is being hampered by a critical skills shortage.
The shortage is said to be so severe that the available capital expenditure budget is not being spent in full.
Of the $484m set-aside for 2006-07, only $186m had been spent. Transnet is turning to trainers from Sri Lanka to train crane and straddle carrier operators.
